It all comes down to why Kerry has chosen these paths for his respective MA voting record and nationwide rhetoric to take.

On one hand, I don't have any problems voting for politicians in the same manner that I'd retain a lawyer. (Keeping in mind, most politicians are lawyers.) It's nice if they would be inclined to personally side with my case had I related it to them over a few beers, but what I mostly want is someone to lend their influence to my side during whatever tenure is on my dime. The other hand -- that of the passionate yet effective leader with perfectly aligned goals -- sadly belongs in the same political funbox as enlightened dictators and efficient communism.*

Perhaps Kerry feels his primary obligation to those he is sworn to uphold at the time: his fellow [presumably gun-toting] soldiers while in Vietnam; his fallen comrades while testifying to the Senate; his gun-grabbing state base while serving that same body; and now the ever diverse American public. Most admirable, after a fashion. Or perhaps he plans to appoint Diane Feinstein the DOJ ministry in order to suit a long-festering ideology once the last hanging chad has fallen. Tragically heroic, if you happen to agree with such boneheadedness.

*Belated kudos to dasein for introducing this POV to me long ago, somehow imbuing my thought process with true pragmatism for those times when being a mere cynic isn't enough.
